The mighty Divinyls led by the incomparable Chrissy Amphlett had been making their presence felt throughout the 1980’s with a string of fantastic Australian pub rock. The girl from Belmont High School in Geelong had an on-stage and on-screen presence like no other female Australian artist had displayed.

At the start of the 1990’s, the Divinyls hit the charts with this raunchy, pretty explicit track for its time – accompanied by a film clip that did little to water down that raunchiness. It made the Australian public sit up and take even more notice of the Divinyls than they already had, with some quarters demanding that it be banned from radio airplay due to its lyrical content.

Sadly, in 2013, Chrissy succumbed to a combination of breast cancer and multiple sclerosis, passing away at the age of 54. One of her dying wishes was that this anthem become a reminder to all women to self-examine for breast cancer. The “I Touch Myself Project” was launched with a number of female performers recording an acoustic version of this song.
